John Hearne wrote his original setting of Contra Plagam for chorus and piano in 2000, and it was first performed by voices of the National Youth Choir of Scotland at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in 2008. Two new versions of the work were created in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic for Jack Sutte – one for trumpet and piano, and one for trumpet, organ and bass drum. The melody used in the last stanza of Hearne’s setting is based on a 14th century Hussite chorale.
